NOTE CARDS: The Phrase Method:
- Set-up: At the top of an index card turned horizontal, write the verse reference along with the translation (CSB, ESV, etc.). Split the verse into phrases (unless too small) and write as in the example below. On the other side of the index card, write only the reference. Read the verse aloud over and over. Meditate on each word and phrase.
Lamentations 3:22-23 NIV
22 Because of the LORD’s great love
we are not consumed,
for His compassions never fail.
23 They are new every morning;
great is Your faithfulness.
22 Because of the LORD’s great love
we are not consumed,
for His compassions never fail.
23 They are new every morning;
great is Your faithfulness.
- Practice saying aloud the first phrase over and over. Then review the whole verse. Without looking at the card, practice the first phrase again over and over. Your goal should be exact wording of the translation you're using. Don't be lax in this.
- Move on to the second phrase. Practice saying the second phrase over and over. Review the whole verse. Without looking at the card, try saying the first and second phrases together over and over.
- Move on to the next phrase and follow the same practice until you have the whole verse memorized. Try repetitions of seven. Repetition is a key to memorization. Don't forget to meditate on the verse. Bible meditation can be life changing.
- Review the verse daily, and eventually you'll be able to see the reference and say the verse.
- NOTE: Reading the verse aloud and quoting them aloud is not necessary, but it builds the verse in your mind better since you aren't merely reading or imagining it but actually hearing it.
First Letter Method:
- Set-up: At the top of an index card turned horizontal, write the verse reference along with the translation (CSB, ESV, etc.). Split the verse into phrases (unless too small) and write each phrase as in the example below.
Romans 6:23 CSB
For the wages of sin is death,
but the gift of God is eternal life
in Christ Jesus our Lord.
For the wages of sin is death,
but the gift of God is eternal life
in Christ Jesus our Lord.
- Turn the index card vertical. Fold the card so that the top vertical edge is now lined up with the bottom vertical edge. The written verse should be inside the fold, and the front and back should be blank.
- On one side, write the reference with the translation (CSB, ESV, etc.).
- At the top of the other side, write the first letter of the Bible book and then the chapter and verse. Below that, written one after the other, write the first letter of each word in the first phrase as below. Do this for each phrase. You can use punctuation if you want. (See below.)

- Open the card and read the verse over and over. Close the card and turn to the "first letter" side. Try to say the verse using the first letter of each word. You may have to go phrase by phrase. Practice until you can say the verse correctly. Your goal should be exact wording of the translation you're using. Don't be lax in this.
- Review the verse daily and, at the end of your review, try to say the verse by looking only at the reference. Eventually, you'll be able to see the reference and say the verse.
